Camera Obscuras around the Exchange…Sunday April 25th
Thanks to the generous support of the Manitoba Lotteries, aceartinc. has commissioned local artists, Sarah Anne Johnson & Andrew Milne, to create a camera obscura in ace and other locations around the city which will be free for pleasure seekers to visit in the run up to World Pinhole Photography Day 2010. And as a special workshop, Sarah and Andrew will show the ArtCity youth how to build a camera obscura in their centre!
A camera obscura (from the Latin for “dark room” or “darkened chamber”) projects an image from the outside of a room onto a flat surface inside via a carefully positioned hole. The external scene is reproduced, upside-down, but with color and perspective eerily preserved.
Standing inside a camera obscura is effectively like standing in a large pinhole camera. It’ll give you a unique understanding of how pinhole photography works. But as importantly, it is an enchanting experience, one which imparts a sense of the mystery involved in art-making.

Dance performances in the camera obscuras
Local dancer, Ming Hon, is creating a dance that will be performed within some of the camera obscuras. You are invited to watch the eruptions and flutterings that take place when the outdoors goes indoors. Outside Plug In ICA at 2pm
Ming Hon is an independent dance artist and choreographer. Ming’s main artistic intent is to connect her inherent natural movement vocabulary of moving in an off-kilter and unsettled way with her interest in surreal conceptual narratives and caricatures.

4×5ft Land Camera Project
Andrew Milne is constructing a 4 foot by 5 foot land camera with support from the Winnipeg Arts Council. The huge camera will be used to capture an image of the aceartinc. building facade from the parking lot at Princess and McDermot on the afternoon of the 25th April. The resulting image will be on display at Platform from the 27th April until the 4th May.

Liz Garlicki and Lyndsay Ladobruk
Liz Garlicki is a Winnipeg artist who explores gentrification and advertising culture based on the milieu surrounding her.
Miss Lyndsay Ladobruk is a Winnipeg performance artist. Here esthetic of humor mixed with serious messages is something that she uses to draw in and seduces an audience and then leave them examiningtheir own life.
Outside aceartinc. at 2:30pm. Other obscura locations depending on our mood we’ll perform for you.

Pinhole Photography Workshop for members

To celebrate the international extravaganza of DIY, photography aceartinc. and PLATFORM: centre for photographic + digital art are joining forces and pooling resources to impart the skill of experimental pinhole photography to a few of our respective members.
Last year’s workshop was a roaring success- totally oversubscribed and gorgeously over-achieving. Book your place on this year’s workshop and learn the gentle craft of pinhole photography and get your pictures uploaded onto the WPPD website!
This workshop will take place over two Sundays with local artist, Sarah Crawley.
Sunday 11th to make the camera and Sunday 18th April to develop the photos.
Participants will learn how to make a camera, take pictures with it, develop their images and finally upload them onto ace’s website as well as the official W.P.P.D. website, and exhibit the results on PLATFORM’s members wall P121.
Participants need to bring scissors, masking tape, a smock and 3 to 6 containers such as shoeboxes, Pringle cylinders, biscuit tins, film canisters etc. (round containers are preferable) but all other supplies (photo paper, film processing, paint, etc and all tuition is included in the subsidised $60 fee- a deal if ever a Winnipegger saw one! If you are interested but broke, get in touch with either ace or Platform.
There are very limited places and these will be awarded on a first-come, first-served basis, so hurry!

Workshop for the RRaCe queer youth project
This is the final workshop the Rainbow Resource Centre youth will be taking with ace’s exhibiting artists before their own exhibition opens in June. Daoust will give them the low-down on pinhole cameras and set them off on a pint-sized picture project.
This project was made possible by the generous support of the Winnipeg Arts Council and the Winnipeg Foundation through the Youth Arts Initiative Collaborative Grant Program.

Les chambres obscures
Grâce à l’appui généreux de Manitoba Lotteries, aceartinc. a pu offrir une commande aux artistes locaux Sarah Anne Johnson & Andrew Milne, pour qu’ils créent une chambre obscure à ace ainsi que d’autres lieux à travers la ville. Ceci permettra aux curieux de venir les voir en préparation pour la journée World Pinhole Photography Day 2010. Sarah et Andrew vont aussi présenter un atelier spécial pour montrer aux jeunes comment construire une chambre obscure dans leur centre!
Une chambre obscure (venant du Latin camera obscura qui signifie « chambre noire » ou « chambre noircie ») projète une image de l’extérieur d’une chambre sur une surface plate en passant à travers un trou très bien placé. La scène externe est reproduite, à l’envers, mais les couleurs et la perspective sont étrangement conservées.
Se tenir à l’intérieur d’une chambre obscure est effectivement comme si on se tenait à l’intérieur d’un grand sténopé. Cela vous donnera une compréhension unique sur le fonctionnement de la photographie effectué par cet appareil. Également important est le fait que c’est une expérience qui enchante, et qui révèle un sens du mystère qui entoure la création de l’art.

Andrew Milne est un photographe de processus alternatif et un artiste multidisciplinaire basé à Winnipeg.

Des spectacles de danse dans les chambres obscures
Le danseuse Ming Hon, créeront chacune leur choréographie respective qui seront éxécutées à l’intérieur de certaines chambres obscures. Vous êtes invité à venir observer les éruptions et les battements qui prendront place lorsque l’extérieur est transporté à l’intérieur. Veuillez contacter aceartinc. pour plus de détails.
Ming Hon est une artiste danseuse indépendante ainsi que choréographe. Son intention principale est de relier le vocabulaire de ses mouvements naturels plutôt débalancés et détraqués avec l’intérêt qu’elle porte aux narratifs conceptuels surréels et les caricatures.
Projet 4×5 ft Land Camera Project
Andrew Milne construit une « land camera » de 4 pieds par 5 pieds avec l’appui du Conseil des arts de Winnipeg. Cette immense caméra sera placée pour qu’elle puisse capter une image du bâtiment aceartinc. depuis le stationnement des rues Princess et McDermot l’après-midi du 25 avril. L’image qui en résulte sera mise en exposition à PLATFORM du 27 avril au 4 mai.

Atelier de sténopé pour les membres
Afin de célébrer l’extravagance internationale de la photographie DIY, aceartinc. et PLATFORM: centre for photographic + digital art unissent leurs forces et mettent leurs ressources en commun pour transmettre leurs compétences en ce qui a trait à l’expérimentation avec la photographie prise par sténopé avec quelques-uns de nos membres.
L’atelier de l’année dernière a été un succès retentissant; il y eut trop de participants et on a surperformé au niveau des résultats. Réserver votre place dans l’atelier cette année et apprenez l’art subtil de la photographie du sténopé et faites télécharger vos images sur le site Web de WPPD!
L’atelier, donné par Sarah Crawley, une artiste locale, aura lieu deux dimanches de fil. Le 11 avril, il s’agit de construire l’appareil, ensuite le dimanche 18 avril, les photos seront développées.
Les participants apprendront comment faire une caméra, comment s’en servir pour prendre des photos, comment développer leurs images et, enfin, ils les téléchargeront sur le site Web de ace ainsi que le site Web officiel de W.P.P.D, et exposeront les résultats sur le mur des membres P121 de PLATFORM.
Les participants doivent apporter des ciseaux, du ruban adhésif de marquage, une blouse et 3 à 6 contenants; par exemple des boîtes de souliers, des cylindres de Pringles, des boîtes de biscuits, des contenants de film, etc. (les contenants ronds sont préférables) mais tous les autres matériaux (papier photographique, le développement du film, la peinture, etc. et les frais de scolarité sont inclus dans les 60 $ subventionnés; une bonne affaire même selon un Winnipegois ou une Winnipegoise! Si vous êtes intéressé mais vous n’avez pas les fonds nécessaires, rejoignez-nous à ace ou à PLATFORM.
Les places sont très limitées et seront accordées selon le principe de premier arrivé, premier servi, alors faites vite!

Atelier pour le projet RRaCe queer youth
Ceci est le dernier atelier que les jeunes du Rainbow Resource Centre prendront avec les artistes qui exposent à ace avant de présenter leur propre exposition en juin. Daoust leur donnera des conseils par rapport aux sténopés et les mettra en route vers leur propre projet de portrait miniature.
